ReviewOutpost reviewed Divine Divinity and had a lot of fun playing the game. They gave it a score of 86% and awarded the game with a Reviewer’s Choice.

Here’s their conclusion:

“Divine Divinity sports a large amount of game play, a familiar interface, expansive character choices, an interesting plot line, detailed graphics and environments, and nice audio to keep you pulled into the game. Divine Divinity is a must have action/RPG game that has managed to get the mix just right.”

QuandaryLand sent word that they reviewed Divinity and rather liked what they saw – click here for the full review. Here’s a quote:

"I find that it's crept onto my list of 5 favourite RPGs of all time. And that's one tough list to get on, believe me!"

[February 20th, 2003]

Have a look at what Gameboomers had to say about Divine Divinity in their very well written review of the game. They gave it 5 out of 5.

"Divine Divinity stands head and shoulders above the competition in sheer good heartedness. And if any RPG stands a chance of bringing new fans to the genre, this is the one. Never taking itself too seriously, the story draws you into the game, and never lets you go. A gentle learning curve, an easy inventory interface, a virtually seamless world to play in, and dozens of quests and hundreds of choices in how to handle them. Dialogs are spiced with humor; monsters have their own quirky personalities; there are parodies of real life situations and historical events, all backed with a musical score that could be a bestseller all by itself."

[February 7th, 2003]

Somehow we missed this but recently someone pointed out to us that IGN awarded Divine Divinity with two more awards.
One for "Outstanding Achievement in Music" and one for "Surprise of the Year". In their words:

About the music:

"With the quality of game music continuing to surge, this category had far more worthy candidates than ever before. While it was very difficult to select just one, our choice is the Divine Divinity soundtrack. Composed and created by Kirill Pokrovsky, it very proficiently supports the changing moods and locations in the game, never becoming either overwhelming or repetitive."

About it being a surprise hit:

“Since we focus our attention on CRPGs and online worlds, games in these categories seldom manage to stay outside our radar enough for us to be truly surprised. Nonetheless, there are titles released each year that exceed the expectations of the broader gaming audience. In 2002, we felt Divine Divinity was the biggest sleeper among the various candidates.”

Just-RPG let us know that Divine Divinity scored 2nd in their line up of best RPG's of 2002. Here is some of what they wrote:

"The big-hearted developers at Larian Studios took the extreme interactivity of the world of Ultima VII, added the rich story, character development and dialog from any Bioware game, and married with the quick ease and playability of Diablo. The result is a game that's hard not to play with a stupid smile plastered on your face."

Both RPGDot's readership and editors awarded Divine Divinity the RPG Surprise of the Year 2002 award. Here's some of their conclusion:

"Many people expressed disappointment this year over over-hyped games that did not deliver on what the developers or publishers promised. As an virtual unknown, Divine Divinity was certainly free of that burden. The great thing about the game is that it did deliver what the developers said it would. This probably explains everyone's surprise."

GameAxis reviewed Divine Divinity and came to the conclusion that they too liked it a lot. Their score: 93%. Here's an excerpt from the review:

"Divine Divinity is one of the best RPG's I have ever came across. To be frank, I am someone very particular about story plots when it comes to games, and I placed more emphasis on a story rather than, say, graphics. This game has never failed to absorb me into its world whenever I play, and the excellent music has not once failed to heighten my emotions. Be it tension, excitement or even a sense of urgency. I will highly recommend this game to any RPG lovers, or anyone who is just looking for something fun to play."

[December 24th, 2002]
RPGCodex had 4 of their editors name their Must-Play CRPG of 2002. Two of them named Divine Divinity. Here's what both of them had to say:

"My choice for Divine Divinity as one of my top picks this year is quite simply based on the fact that I played it, and that I quite liked it. What interested me most about the game was the interactivity. Simply put, you can do a lot of things in it that most RPG developers these days don't even consider to implement. To top it off, that's not even the gist of why I like Divine Divinity. If I were you, I'd put Divine Divinity on my holiday list."

"While some will cringe at the thought of *another* isometric high-fantasy CRPG, this game actually has a lot more to offer in the fun-factor department than most of its rivals."

[December, 2002]
RPGFan reviewed Divine Divinity too and rated it 96%.

"Everyone plays games differently, and it is refreshing to come across a game that knows that. And while it is difficult to maintain a level of professionalism while saying such things as "Oh my God! Get this game!" I am afraid I will miss making my point if I do not. So, in closing: Oh my God! Get this game! Divine Divinity will undoubtedly be proudly shown on your shelves for a great length of time (even if its name is not)."

We didn't make first place, but second isn't that bad either. We're very proud to announce that the world's largest online gaming site Gamespy awarded Divine Divinity the runner up award for PC RPG game of 2002! Here's what they had to say:

"Divine Divinity wasn't a game many of us were anticipating -- or had even heard of -- at the beginning of the year, but for Ultima and Diablo fans, Divine Divinity provided a LOT of old-school fun."

[December 16th, 2002]
We're proud to announce that we received Loadedinc.com's 2002 PC game of the year award. This is what they had to say:

"Amongst a barrage of other RPG’s (Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale II, Morrowind…), Divine Divinity managed to break through and offer some of the deepest and most rewarding gameplay I’ve experienced in a PC RPG for quite some time. Divine Divinity takes the best bits of Diablo II, the overall feel of Ultima VII, adds some great dialogue, and throws in more quests than you can shake a stick at… and winds up with what is, in my opinion, the PC Game of the Year."

[December 9th, 2002]
Firing Squad rates Divine Divinity 85%.

IGN's RPGVault just reviewed Divine Divinity. While they do not offer a numerical rating, their overall impression is pretty good. Here's a little bit of what they had to say:

"Divine Divinity has surprising depth and variety, astonishing when one considers the developer is a relatively small company (reportedly 17 people) and did all this without a budget resembling those of other games of comparable scope. "Divine Divinity is een RPG die de beste factoren uit de geschiedenis van het genre naar bovenhaalt. Wie dacht dat een 2D-RPG in het tijdperk waar 3D centraal staat niet meer hooggeprezen kon worden, heeft reden genoeg zijn mening te herzien. Het bewijs dat gameplay nog steeds HET belangrijste aspect voor een game is, is hierbij geleverd. Een pareltje is afgeleverd en we zijn enorm fier dat het voor een keer van Belgische makelij is. Mijn complimenten Larian!"

Divine Divinity is awarded the RPGdot platinum award !!!

It is with great pride that we report to you that Divine Divinity received the RPGdot platinum award, scoring a massive 92%. Here is some of what they had to say:

"This game is fun. This game is addicting. What more needs to be said? Well, I suppose I should convince you its fun. Okay, I can do that. I've been playing nonstop in every spare moment I have since I tore off the packaging and installed this game. With fast-paced action and interesting quests that aren't your normal fed-ex types this game puts a fun little twist on everything. How can you not like a game that gives you quests to wash dishes, blow up supply trains, solve murder mysteries and poison wells?"

"Overlooking this game would be a disservice to yourself. Larian has done what they set out to do. They've given you simple, fun gameplay and the depth that makes the roleplaying genre great. They have blended the best of both hardcore and simple action roleplaying games. The possibility of creating your own adventure is here. The possibility of playing the game the way you want is here. Hey Origin, this is what Ultima 8 should have been."

"There are a lot of words that could be used to describe Divine Divinity. Among other things, the upcoming roleplaying game from Belgium-based developer Larian Studios is massive, ambitious and exciting. However, the more I think about it, I keep coming back to one word in particular: epic!"

Divinity Preview at Gamespot

"Judging by the other games that have been released already, you could say that 2002 has been the year of the epic role-playing game. And if Divine Divinity's great variety of character skills, items, magic spells, and quests is any indication, then Larian Studios' upcoming game is all set to follow suit."

Divinity Preview at PC.IGN

"A stealthy component to the game promises to round general play out. Dousing torches and pinching candles will give gamers a better chance of not being seen in the shadows, as will doing things like initiating the necroshift spell, which actually allows players to take on the form of nearby corpses, be it rabbit or raging goblin. Noise, light, sight. Think about these things when rummaging through the drawers of a noble."

Divinity Demo Preview at Video Game News

"The quantity of options available, the taste of what promises to be an epic story, the graphics, the sound, there’s more packed into this demo then there is in most games. According to the site currently it takes up 3 disks and should be released sometime in September. For anyone who is a fan of Diablo, Baldur’s Gate or Dungeon Siege give this demo a try, you won’t be disappointed. CDV has what seems to be a monster hit on their hands."

Divinity Preview at RPG France

"If Divine Divinity does'nt look that revolutionnary to you, it however seems to combine all the existing qualities. It would be a mistake to compare Divinity with Diablo, since they do not fit at all in the same category. When you want to be accurate, you can say that Diablo 2 pratically doesn't contain any RPG element, whereas Divinity, with its dialogues, the reputation and its consequences, seems to contain much more RPG elements."

E3 Award: Best Fantasy RPG 2nd Runner Up for Divine Divinity at RPGDot

"If you are looking for an epic RPG in the likes of the old Ultima games, Divine Divinity is your game."

[May 22nd, 2002]
Divine Divinity E3 Impressions at Gamespot

"At the same time, your own play style dictates the kind of game you experience. If you spend more time fighting monsters and less time interacting with nonplayer characters, you won't develop relationships with the story characters, and your physical attributes will rapidly evolve. Thus, you won't need many spells or weapon upgrades, but you'll also experience an action game. Conversely, those who talk to villagers and help them with their own side quests will observe Divine Divinity from the prototypically literary vantage point common in traditional RPGs--and they'll also require their help more as well."

[May 7th, 2002]
Divinity Demo: First Impressions at RPGDot

"Divine Divinity integrates components from many games. The story and dialogue trees appear as good as anything Ultima or Baldur's Gate has offered. The graphics are crisp and detailed enough for an isometric RPG. The combat combines the wild massacre abandonment of Diablo (I bagged me well over a hundred monsters in 5 levels of a dungeon) with the real-time-pause functionality of Baldur's Gate. This stops it from becoming an all out potion chugging hack-fest as you can issue orders and use some basic tactics without having to have highly developed reflexes."

Divine Divinity Hands-on look at Gamespy

"What Divine Divinity shows is that with a bit of innovative flair and a solid, compelling story, it is possible to create a rival to the mighty Baldur's Gate series without becoming just another clone. Where it really excels is in giving the player the choice to ignore the rich world and just hack and slash their way through a demon entrenched kingdom fit for any Diablo veteran. This two-tiered system seems sure to open up Divine Divinity to both casual and hardcore players and ensure that CDV have yet another hit in the making."

[May 4th, 2002]
Divine Divinity Preview at Eurogamer

"There are three character classes to choose from when you start out - warrior, mage and survivor - but once the game is underway you can develop skills from any of these three "ways", giving you a wider range of abilities to pick from. For example, if you choose to focus on your survivor skills you can learn how to sneak past guards, lay traps and mines to kill pursuers, and release scorpions to distract your enemies. Following other career paths may allow you to make yourself temporarily invisible, teleport short distances, or view and manipulate objects through walls. This means that killing monsters with a large blunt instrument is not the only way to get past them and complete the game."

"However you choose to approach Divine Divinity, the variety and sheer quantity of options on offer should keep you busy for weeks, with an epic storyline to follow and dozens of optional side quests to divert you along the way."

[May 2nd, 2002]
Divine Divinity Preview and screenshots at Actiontrip

"Unlike other titles of this genre, this game carries consequences for almost every action you perform. So that means if you enter a barn and kill a pig, the owner will be pretty pissed and he will kick your ass for any damage you may have caused him. The same thing goes for stealing - you may enter anybody's house at any time, you can move objects around the living room and bedroom, but if you take something that doesn't rightfully belong to you, your character will develop a really bad reputation among the villagers. On the other hand, if you decide to be righteous and you start helping people in need, you'll quickly become a highly respected individual."

Divine Divinity Preview at GamesDomain

"Many aspects of the world will be familiar to fantasy gamers, since its aspects are derived from many common sources. "Oh, we nicked things from everywhere," laughed Vincke. "Lots of fantasy books, it goes from Raymond Feist, Terry Brooks, Tolkien of course. We looked at Diablo, Baldur's Gate, Ultima - all these kinds of things, they inspired us to create this universe. We basically took the things we liked and said, 'we gotta have that, we gotta have that, we gotta have that,' put it all in a big pot, stirred it, and out came Divinity."

"Divinity is much, much, much more than Diablo. Just in the amount of things you can do, it's actually unfair to compare it to Diablo, because Divinity is a typical RPG in the style of Ultima, with more than 400 quests, 400 NPCs with which you can interact, and a universe which is so vast with so much depth in it."

[April 24th, 2002]
Divine Divinity Hands-On Preview and exclusive interview at Computer and Videogames

"The big question: what does Divine Divinity have to offer over the Baldur's Gate series?

Vincke: Well, we're not really scared about that. One of the main points is the depth of the storyline, which really grips you at certain points and makes you want to continue. Interface-wise, it's dead easy to get into and has a very easy learning curve. Even people who have never played RPGs before liked it.
One of the things that it definitively has over Baldur's Gate is that it doesn't force you to go down the hardcore RPG route. You don't have to go through all the statistics and stuff, you can just pick it up and play and go and fight. If you play it this way then you can develop your character in this way."

How much content will the final game have?
"At the latest count there were over 350 different monsters and character types. There’s also nearly 200,000 lines of dialogs, over 300 quests, 20,000 individual screens, 60 music and ambient tracks, 2,400 voice recordings, three cinematics, 96 skills, 7,000 object types -- you get the picture... Divinity is huge !"

"From what we've seen so far Divine Divinity seems to be shaping up to be a solid role-playing game, with a nice mixture of fast-paced RPG-lite combat and more involved character interaction. With the game hopefully emerging during the summer we should know more soon, but at this point our biggest criticism of Divine Divinity is that goofy title... "

Larian is even promising a highly developed AI for the monsters, where the baddies will communicate and use tactics when battling you-something games like Diablo certainly lack. Based on a personal demonstration.

"From the demo I was given of the game I'd have to say I think their promises are attainable. The AI, the NPC behavior, the pathfinding routines, the interaction with the game world, and the continuous world with no loading screens are all features that are a notch above what the competion is offering in my book."

"I've only seen the tip of the iceberg for what Divinity will be about, but if what I've seen is representative of what will be in the final game (and I believe it is) then this should be a great game. I for one can't wait to see the final product."

"Larian Studios is also very much committed to creating a thrilling musical background and sound effects for the game."

"Also, Larian is cherishing a few “RPG gaming commandments” that they refer to as guidelines for creating an immersive experience. Divinity should be as interactive, non-linear, player-oriented, and believable as possible."

"Finally, we should mention the unique character development system, which will no doubt heighten the immersion factor and bring even more nuances and fun into the gameplay."

[23 April, 2000]
Interview at www.fragland.net

"Graphically, Divinity is a masterpiece. The effects they are making aren't all finished yet, but what I saw at this stage allready made me love it. Great real-time reflections in water, lightning that looks like it's gonna kill you and not like it's some white line on your screen and egg-explosions as egg-explosions should look like (not like an atomb bomb that is). Even the environment is made like it could exist in real life, with rats, butterflies, and even killer-bee's :p "

"If you like playing your own games or stories, there will be a very powerfull editor included that helps you create your own worlds. Whether you want a slasher-map in the dungeon or more of an RPG-map above the ground, everything can be made, and the editor will create a world around it as you want."

"No-one that likes Role-Playing Games or Adventures should leave this title aside when it's released since it will give you hours and hours of fun."

Preview at www.infolder.com with a special part on the music in Divinity and some more screenshots.

"The effect of these two spells in the middle of the night, against the background of the pouring rain and the reflections in the water, is really unprecedented ! And then to think that they're doing all of this using their in-game engine ! I for one was really impressed !"

"If you are not convinced about the quality of this team after reading this preview, I suggest you wait until the demo is out, but now that I've had a shot at playing Divinity, it's hard for me to think of anything else than "We want Divinity, we want Divinity, we want Divinity!!!" Clear enough for you ?"

"The graphical beauty, the rich detail, the AI of the opponents, the scope of the world, the interactivity of the world and the story assure Larian of its first hit."

"The first thing you notice is the interface, which is rather different from other RPG's. It is quite obvious that everything about this interface has been carefully balanced to make the player's life as easy as possible."

"The interaction with the environment is excellent, something that is accentuated by the high quality sound effects. "

"The game's focus will be on story and character development ; and more specifically, the development of your main character."

"Larian is taking an interesting approach to skill development, which they adoringly refer to as the "research plate."

"One of the most interesting aspects of Divinity will be the AI system."

"The team at Larian, however, genuinely seems to care about what they're doing. If you go to the forums on their main page, they actually listen to fan/reader feedback and respond to what people have to say. These are the kind of people I want developing my games. And yes… I still am anxiously awaiting the other single player RPGs I mentioned above, but right now I have high hopes for Divinity and Larian's success, so don't go and ruin my mood."

Interview with Lar at www.exxtreme3d.com

"... Deciding who is good and bad will be up to you, the player, especially at some dramatic moment in the game where the choice really will not be that easy. But then again, such emotional choices increase immersion. I know for sure that a lot of players will curse at us at some point, when they figure out some particular thing. They’ll like it, yet they’ll curse. It’s like the movie the Usual Suspects. You know you’ll be tricked, you are on the lookout, yet still you’re tricked. I’m actually looking forward to the reactions of the players to that particular thing..."

[22 March, 2000]
Interview with Lar at rpgvault.ign.com

"We put quite a lot focus on the AI in that we try to give every monster and NPC a different behavior. To say the least, the AI can be quite challenging at times. You have guys who try to lure you and lock you up in a cage for instance. You have dudes who ambush you, monsters who put traps at crucial locations, a lot of group AI also where the enemies cooperate, monsters who take healing potions, who take the treasure away before your nose, run for help when they're in trouble, monsters that patrol and investigate and so on."

[17 March, 2000]
Divinity preview at www.gamerscentral.net

"Divinity is an isometric role playing game filled with fantasy creatures, powerful magic and an intriguing storyline. The game can best be described as a healthy mix between Diablo and Baldur's Gate with just a hint of Ultima. It features a couple of unexpected role playing elements that make playing Divinity quite different from anything you have played before.

"Any resemblances to traditional RPGs end here, however, as all other aspects of Divinity hint at a level of innovative ambition that has not been seen in this genre for a long time."

"Immersion is also critical to the enjoyment of any good RPG, and Divinity promises to have it in spades... In terms of action and reaction, Divinity's immersion owes a debt to its natural and original gameplay."

"Divinity: Sword of Lies" stands to employ enough traditional role-playing elements while offering plenty of unique innovation to make for an exciting prospect."
