What is fastest way out and can I come back later (at a higher level) to collect all the goodies and more XP for killing remaining monsters?? DO I need to go down to the level with Lichs?? Or can I save that until I'm higher level?

I really don't know why game devs did this: trapped in a very long, very tough dungeon with no way to replenish supplies or sell loot. Don't like it!!!

The lower levels (opened by reading a scroll on a pedestal) are optional, and you can return later. The exit is to the far west on the main level (there are health and mana shrines near the start that you can return to, if needed).

Iona's dungeon maps: level 1, starting cell level and levels 2-4 (spoilers)

Raze,
thanks for the help
I'm up to the 1st portal, trying to activate it, but the Steel Guardians are just TOO tough- I whittle one down maybe 30%, then I have to run to the heal shrine, and when I get back, the &*()&*( S.G. has completely healed also!!!! I'll never be able to kill it.

The whole castle/Elona's dungeon quest is a major design flaw in D.D. : it's part of the main quest, so people will tend to try it early on, but once you step into the castle you ARE STUCK, No going back till you can get out of the dungeon, the VERY LONG, VERY TOUGH dungeon, that used up all my many heal and mana and restore portions (and I had a LOT going in).

I think I read somewhere that you can hex edit the save files, so I guess I'll have to try adding a couple dozen "Super Heal" potions and see if I can get thru this

What portal are you at? If you are referring to a teleporter pad surrounded by 3 pyramids on pedestals, you do not need to activate it to leave. It would provide a shortcut to the exit, but you are 3/4 of the way there anyway.

You should be able to run past most of the opponents there, with just a few closed doors/gates to slow you down. If you have any shadow potions or statuettes, they could help with that (if you washed the dishes in the castle, the cook would have given you a 'strange spice' shadow potion).

If you have a save before entering the castle, you could always reload and wait until you are a higher level. I did much of Rivertown and Verdistis, and cleared the Rivertown sewers before heading to the castle, and didn't have much trouble with most of the opponents there.

Generally speaking, it is better to explore and do side quests first, and then complete the main quests. You don't want to leave quests so long you forget about them, though, or do a later quest that causes you to miss out on an earlier one (ie if you do not arrange an escort for the healers before completing any of the quests that give you an invitation to the castle, they will move on their own).

You don't need to hex edit to get restoration potions. At least in the disk version, there is a simple exploit to duplicate items which can be stacked.
Drag a stack out of (or into) your inventory (or container) and hold down the control key before dropping. This will bring up the split stack pane; type in a negative number and hit enter (the checkmark will be greyed out). This can also be done in the trade window.

I don't know if this was fixed in the download version, but if so you could try the Lost Items procedure, or simply use DAD's item editor to give some crappy piece of equipment great bonuses, to equip long enough to get out of the dungeon. I don't know if either has been tried with the download version.

I don't love hex edit or whatever (just my opinion) ....

The Steel Guardians I kill with the Lightning Spell ! If you haven't skillpoints left and have not this Lightning skill ... see if you have some weapon with Lighting damage on it.
Try also with Frost and/or Poison damage ! Try out and see what kind of special damage kills them the fastest !

Wish you good luck !! wink

Used the Dup trick to dupe up a dozen minor Restore potions ( it was the only potion I had left!!!) and finally got out. I was lvl 18, using a 3rd lvl Meteorstrike and having a VERY hard time.

Did some side quests and exploring. Got to lvl 19, raised Meteorstrike to 4th level, went back in, and it made all the difference in the world!!!! Kill 'em in half the time compared to 3rd lvl Meteor! Game has some balance issues; it would be OK to have a too tough dungeon, but NOT when you get trapped in it like this one.

btw the Guardians could be hit good by my low level mace (bat of Striking?), sometimes did more damage than 3rd MeteorStrike

thnx all

Try to use the scorpion trap next time you encounter some tough part. I killed almost everything in the the northern part of the forest there with only 3 scorpions. Leveled up about 6 times in half an hour.

It helped me survive Elona's dungeon on lvl 17 or so. You should really try it wink

Iona's dungeon has Health/Mana shrines near the start which give you a full restore and they replenish themselves pretty quickly.
