When I try to install I get an error message that says something about bad media or a corrupt file.

Not off to a good start, I'd say. Is this a common problem, or should I post a dxdiag file here?

I assume you checked for any dust, scratches or other physical damage to the CD. Do you have a different optical drive you could try?
It that the same problem described below?

installation error

No, it''s not the same. The error message says something about "bad installation media or a corrupt installation file".

I have tried it on both of my drives. On one drive nothing happens at all (ie the disk is not even recognized as being in the drive); in the second drive autorun starts the installation but then I get the error message a few minutes in (it says 15 minutes and 50 seconds left on the install)..

There is nothing obviously wrong with the disk itself. Norton Antivirus has been disabled.

That could be a problem with the CD itself, or more likely a conflict between the drives and copy protection. Do you have access to a different computer you could try it on?
Unfortunately, the files are all compiled together, so there is no manual install procedure, that I am aware of.

Someone from Larian studios should be checking the forum in a few hours, or you could email support@larian.com

Thanks. I can wait. I have many games...

I also had trouble with my main drive not reading Sacred occasionally, and it won't read or install Diablo 2 either. My second drive (which is actually a writer and therefore not really supposed to be used for games) can install Diablo2, but it, too, won't install Beyond Divinity, very consistently. On the other hand, no trouble with installing KOTOR, NWN HOA, GOTHIC 2, etc.

So I am left wondering what is going on. Possibly I need a new drive, and this would be a good excuse to spend more money on my computer for some upgrading. I'll play around with my other games to see if the problem seems to be more drive-related than game related. On the other hand I only have ten days to return the game.

If the drive doesn't read some disks at all, then that sounds like a hardware issue. Have you had any problems with non-game CDs?

Might be a starforce 3 problem, my drives took about 3 solid minutes to recognize the disk and verify it...

If they are using starforce its a very iffy protection, might be the cause of disc reading problems.

However im not 100% sure its the protection they use.

I don't know what protection they use, but it's supposed to be brand new and top-of-the-line, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gave problems with certain cd-players. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

I'm starting to think it must be the copy protection, because my older games install without a hitch.

Yeah thats what Starforce 3 is...its a damn nice protection but theres always a tradeoff with those, the customer who pay's for it ends up having more problems then the people its designed to stop.

Copy protection certainly isnt a perfect science yet. I wouldnt be surprised if this is a SF3 problem.
