Have you tried hosting?

Are you trying to connect in a new game, or an existing save?
If the latter, have your friend check if any characters are encumbered, and if so, drop, stash or redistribute the excess weigh, save and then try joining again.

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game? Firewalls have caused conflicts (generally on loading screens) and overlays from graphics tweaking/monitoring programs or chat programs have also caused issues.

Are either of you using any mods?

Try verifying local files for both games: in the Steam library, right click on Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition and select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and then click on the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache...' button.
With the GOG version, in the (optional) Galaxy client, select Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition in the left column, then click on the More button, and in the Manage menu select 'Verify / Repair'.

Have you tried different ways to connect? If you are both using the Steam version, or both GOG, the respective clients have a lobby feature, as well as invitations. There is also Direct Connection (using an IP address or Server ID [that the host can get in the Connection Menu {hit Esc to bring up the menu in character creation or in game, or click the diamond icon at the top of the mini-map in game}]), or LAN (though if not on the same local network, that would require the use of VPN software, such as Hamachi or Tunngle).

If you check the Event Viewer, does that give an error code or 'Faulting Module' file name that might help identify the cause of the crash?
- click Start (or WinKey-R or WinKey-W in Win 8), then type "event viewer" into the search box. in Windows 10, 'event' should bring up 'View event logs'.
- after starting the Event Viewer, expand 'Windows Logs' in the left column and select 'Application'
- in the center column, look for a recent error (maybe sort by Date and Time) for the game
- check the information under the 'General' tab below the list of events, starting with "Faulting application name..."

Thank you very much, the problem was the weight after all.

But now we have a new problem, we have collected 15 blood/star stones but zixzax doesnt open "The Chapel", he stands near the statue and says "I wonder what awaits you in the next chamber".We tried to kill him but it didn't work. What are we suppose to do? we can't pass the source temple door...
Can you help us again please?

Most likely for the last opened elemental portal you need to enter, see the conversation there, then returned to the main section of the homestead through the portal. Check the map / mini-map; if there is an active portal without a map marker, that was the last one opened, and the one holding up Zixzax from opening more portals.

Alternately, try interacting with the statue, in case you still need to choose the next portal, but the dialogue didn't trigger when you approached.
