i'm finding this game a really confusing experience at the moment, which is a shame because its a game i really love and one i have never experienced before.

im still in cyseal at the moment and finding it impossible to find and complete quests, eg. there 2 quests currently where the npcs say to me "you cant use me as a go between" (one of them ishmashell on the beach).

i still haven't solved the murder mystery. i have no idea where to go. i've just barely managed to get level 3.

another thing is crafting. i haven't crafted anything yet. it seems random and unexplained. i don't know where to get recipes and i don't know what might be useful in certain situations.

will things ever fall into place?

Rather than try to follow specific quests in a linear manner, if there are no clues given or obvious next steps, try just exploring.

Ishmashell is only involved in that dialog; your character just have to decide what to do (throw him back in the ocean or keep him).
For the murder mystery, start with the crime scene, then look for the body (try the morgue, or the graveyard), and that should lead to other things to look into.

You can learn crafting recipes from books, or just by experimenting to see what will work.
There are several crafting guides, such as:
