Baldur's Gate 3

Mod Issues

Supported Mods

Supported mods can be found in our in-game Mod Manager, created using our modding Toolkit, which can be downloaded on Steam for PC players.
With this new and supported way to create and install mods, you should see improvements in compatibility and accessibility.

While there are always risks of mods breaking – especially when your game updates – supported mods aim to offer greater compatibility and the ability to be used on all platforms. When you download and play with files that modify your game, you change the way your game behaves, which can create conflicts with the way your game is designed to run.

Changes to the game, such as a new update, or mods with certain dependencies or conflicts, can impact how supported mods function.

Playing with a modded save sometimes means that issues can occur, such as:

- Failing to load past a certain percentage when starting a save
- Crashing on launch
- Issues with the UI, including missing options or overlapping menus
- Shader issues, including missing makeup or face textures
- A land of naked avatars during Character Creation

To ensure you get to have the best experience while modding your game, we recommend:

- Keeping your mods updated regularly – you can do this by clicking the update button on the mod listing from the Mod Manager.
- Be wary that sometimes after a game update, you may experience issues such as the ones mentioned above.
-  If you’re playing multiplayer, both you and your party will need to have the same mods installed.

If you encounter an issue while using mods, you can help our support team track bugs by identifying whether the problem is with the game itself or a mod you may have installed. Understanding the distinction means we can offer you better official game support. However, we are unable to directly manage or fix any player-created mods.

- Navigate to the in-game Mod Manager and un-check your installed mods. With the mods disabled, see if the issue persists.
- If the issue no longer persists, and therefore seems related to a particular mod, you can reach out to the mod author and leave them a comment on the mod listing that explains some more about the issue you’re experiencing.
- If the issue persists without the mod installed and you believe the issue is with the base game, please report it to our support team using this report form.

Third Party Mods

Third-Party mods are mods created using a program other than our official Toolkit. While you can still use these mods, troubleshooting may look a little different.

If you are experiencing an issue when trying to launch the game, or in game, you should remove any existing mod files, especially after a major game update as some changes may create conflicts with how your mods work.

Check the 'Mods' and 'Public' folders in the '...\Baldurs Gate 3\Data' install folder; if either folder is present, they are safe to delete. If applicable, you can also delete the modsettings.lsx file in the profile folder, if you're not using a new profile for the current patch.

The game uses the local AppData folder, rather than Documents (C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3). For compatibility, if the game is started and is there is no local AppData folder for the game, but there is in Documents, the existing profiles and configuration files are copied over, which can copy old mods there, as well. In Windows an easy way to get to that folder would be to copy %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods into the location bar in Explorer and hit Enter.

In the launcher, if you click on the button with the gear icon (in the bottom left of the window) and scroll down, there are buttons to open the profile folder or open the installation folder.

If the launcher is giving a mismatch data warning, it will have created a log file listing any files in the install folder which are not expected, as well as files in the Mods folder. To check it, copy %LocalAppData%\Larian Studios\Launcher\Cache into the location bar in Explorer and hit Enter, then look for a text file named steam_<Current.Version.Number>_alteredFiles.txt (or similarly, starting with 'galaxy_', for the GOG version).

If you are still having an issue launching the game, or in game, please contact support using the Contact Support form.
